This is MY Challenge............. What's Yours?

The Arctic Challenge 2009
This is a temporary page until the main site is up and running very soon!
Where do you see yourself in 2009?
OYTS is all about inspiring positive change in people through the challenge of adventure under sail. Never mind walking the Great Wall of China or climbing Kilimanjaro. The Arctic Challenge is an exciting and very real challenge right on Scotland’s doorstep. Taking part will stretch you but also help to provide more opportunities for young Scots. What’s it all about?
The voyage will leave from Wick on Monday 13th July. The best case scenario to cross the North Sea is for a westerly Force 5 wind, giving an average boat speed 8-10 knots and an average distance of 240 miles a day. With that, you could have up to four days visiting the stunning Lofoten Islands that lie in the Arctic Circle off Norway’s west coast, before it’s time for the return leg – arriving in Peterhead on Friday 24th July. The late summer nights will be perfect for the overnight sailing. Sounds great doesn’t it?

But who knows how the weather will be. That’s what makes the Arctic Challenge just that. You’ll be aboard Alba Endeavour, one of our two 72’ steel-hulled ocean-going racing yachts. She’s been round the world twice and will make it to the Arctic. It’s more a question of, “Are you up to it?”

Who can take part?
You can, if you are over 18 and feel fit enough for the challenge. Sailing Alba Endeavour is labour intensive and off-shore sailing can be tough. As well as sailing and navigation, you’ll be expected to help with cooking and cleaning. You’ll be sleeping on ‘pipe-cot’-type berths in a cabin with your fellow crew.
